Coonamble is the main township in Coonamble Shire, with a population of approximately 3000 people. The Shire is dependent upon agriculture with broadacre dryland cropping of cereals, legumes, pulses and oilseeds, beef cattle, and sheep. Farms are getting larger and more efficient, with more work being done by contract rather than on-farm staff, hence the empty farmhouses.
